CHARACTER NAME: Milo Fishtooth
AGE: 17
CANON: Fish Hooks
CANON POINT: after “Pool Party Panic”
FAMILY TYPES:
Deep Savers: While he doesn't fit many of the personality traits, he has a really strong connection with water.
Nature Spirits: Milo is far from perfect, and usually lives a normal teenage life, so the neutral-good choice fits nicely.
Wind Guardians: He fits the personality aspects of this family near-perfectly! And also has an affinity for birds.
Virus Busters: Despite his many faults, Milo is a good friend with a big heart.
APPEARANCE:
Short, a little on the chubby side, and of Polynesian descent. He dyes his hair blue and has a small goatee. He dresses in a light blue striped shirt, blue shorts, and orange flip flops.
In his home universe, he’s a betta fish. His body is covered in blue stripes and he has a large, frilly dorsal fin similar to his hair.
PERSONALITY:
Milo is a friendly, upbeat, social dude. He’s basically the word “extrovert” personified, keeping his emotions close to the surface and his thoughts out loud. From the very first episode he’s been shown to be excitable and optimistic. He lives entirely in the moment, bouncing from one adventure to the next. Unfortunately, he spends so much time in the present that he has no plans for the future, and has trouble understanding that his actions have consequences. This can often lead to him accidentally hurting himself and other people. He’ll even put his friends in life-or-death situations, such as convincing them to leave the fish tanks and explore the pet store around them. He never means to put them in danger or hurt their feelings. When he screws up, he'll do everything he can to fix it.
A lot of the other fish misinterpret him as being selfish. He’s self-centered; and will put his own wants and needs first, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t care about other people. He has an extremely close friendship with his brother Oscar and best friend Bea, and helps them out whenever he can. Oscar is practically his polar opposite; being the reserved, responsible, introverted brother. They get along great despite their differences and frequent squabbles. His relationship with Bea is not as strong, but they always go to each other for support and advice. When Milo really gets out of control, Oscar and Bea are there to snap him to his senses.
He has a lot of confidence in himself, and believes that anything is possible if you keep trying. As soon as he sets his mind on something, he’ll go after it recklessly. Despite his bravado, when his ego gets shattered, it can really hurt his feelings. He loves being the center of attention, and he tries to earn the adoration of as many people as possible. He doesn’t actually have many close friends aside from Oscar and Bea. The only other fish he hangs out with are Albert Glass and Jumbo Shrimp, but they spend more time with Oscar than him. While his best buds have their own friend circles; he’s usually either with them or by himself, getting lost in his own head.
He’s prone to lapses in reality, and daydreams often. He’s a big goofball, a class clown, and has trouble concentrating on his work or responsibilities. He interprets his dreams way too literally sometimes, and is more likely to hurt himself when a fantasy goes too far. His friends help keep him tethered, but it can be hassle to get him under control. He’s also prone to lying (again, he doesn’t understand consequences), and will try to carry on with it for as long as he can. He’s lied about his health, his species, his gender, etc.
In “Fail Fish”, they discovered that Milo also suffers from an attention disorder. Whenever his life is at risk he has near-photographic memory, leading to some very dangerous study sessions. He enjoys living life on the edge, and pushing his boundaries as far as they’ll go. He even describes himself as someone who “Goes on dangerous adventures for no reason.” He’s ridden over waterfalls in barrels, flown on the back of a cockatoo, been eaten by a moray eel, chased by a cat, gone “Peopling” (hitting humans with a fishing rod), among other things. He’s traveled outside of the fish tanks more than anyone else, sometimes without the equipment needed to keep himself hydrated.
Basically, he’s a kid who’s got plenty of faults, but has a good heart, and just wants to enjoy life to it’s fullest.
HISTORY:
Milo’s life is fairly mundane, for the most part. He’s just a student in high school, dealing with the average dramas that any teenager would- girlfriends, grades, sports teams, dances and school plays. His high school just happens to be in a fish tank at “Bud’s Pets”. Luckily for them, business has been slow, and the fish are able to carry on their lives in a gigantic series of connected tanks.
Not much is known about Oscar and Milo’s childhood, and they live in a two-room apartment by themselves. They have a very close sibling bond and spend most of their time together and with Bea. He gets along well with most of the other students. He’s even chummy with his teacher Mr. Baldwin, despite how much he wishes Milo would focus and get his work done. He also has a rivalry with the school’s resident jerk, Randy Pincherson.
Milo has had a number of romantic relationships, most notably with Pamela Hamster. They met when Milo, Oscar and Bea visited “Hamsterwood”; the Hollywood-inspired hamster cages on the other side of the pet store. He was able to trick her into believing he was a hamster with a costume he found. Their relationship, and his lie, managed to last for weeks over video chats. When she came to visit him, he was so avoidant of telling her the truth that he smashed all the fish tanks and disguised his house as a hamster cage. When the other fish confronted him about destroying their homes, he was forced to reveal what he really was. Pamela forgave him, because she was actually lying about her species too- she was a gerbil. They stayed together for a while, but eventually broke up. He was so heartbroken over it that Bea dated him briefly to cheer him up. They ended the relationship quickly, preferring to stay friends.
Milo cares more about adventures, parties, and joining fun extracurricular activities than actually doing his schoolwork. The normal high school life can be kind of boring to him, but he doesn’t realize how much he loves his fishy comforts until he loses them.
The most notable adventure he's gone on so far has been “waking up” from his fish life in the episode “Pool Party Panic”. The episode revealed him as a human, along with everyone else; and that his fish self had just been a dream. He could remember bits of it vividly, but shrugged it off and continued with his human life.
Bea’s friend Chelsea invited them to a pool party that weekend, and Oscar and Milo were forced to come along. Oscar was nervous because he didn’t feel comfortable with his shirt off, and Milo didn’t want to go because he couldn’t swim. Bea offered to help him learn the next day, and reminded him to feed the classroom fish.
Milo broke into the school that night to check on them, only to realize that the fish in the tank were himself and his friends, just like in his dream. It dawned on him that he wasn’t in the right reality, and his life as a human was the actual dream. The existential revelation freaked him out so badly that he didn’t come home that night, and became obsessed with finding a way to get back to his real life.
He desperately tried to explain the situation to Bea and Oscar the next day at the public pool, but Bea thought he was just making up weird excuses to avoid their swimming lessons. He tried to prove that he was really a fish by swimming, but he wasn’t used to doing it without his tail and nearly drowned in the process. He blacked out, and could briefly see his fish reality, where everyone was dancing and having a good time without him. Bea brought him back to consciousness, and became frustrated with his repeated demands to “wake him up”.
His friends and teachers became so worried about his self-destructive behavior that they signed him up for mandatory counseling. Albert and Jumbo pulled him aside after his meeting and told him that they believed him. They had been considering the possibility of alternate realities, and created a crude scientific experiment to send him into another one. Their machine worked, but it sent him to a universe where he was a pig that lived on a farm. He became discouraged and decided to do some soul-searching.
Sitting alone on a hill, he discovered a talking apple that told him the only way to wake up from the dream would be to find his true self. He realized that the way out had to be the fish tank he saw in the classroom. When he woke up from the farm dream, Albert and Jumbo asked him if he was alright, saying they thought he was dead. He ran off to find his friends and prove that he was telling the truth. They busted into the classroom and discovered that the fishtank was alive- it had arms and legs, and ran away just before Milo could catch it.
Oscar and Bea finally realized he was telling the truth and agreed to help him. They chased the tank through the school, somehow passing through alternate realities and changing species along the way. They arrived at Chelsea’s party, where the living tank was hiding in the crowded pool. Just before Milo could reach it, the pool became a stormy sea and everything else vanished as the tank drifted into the distance. Milo sank into the water, and realized that the only way out of this was to find his true self- in a spire of water and a flash of light, he returned to his fish form and dove into the tank before it could escape. He woke up back home in his fish body.
The episode is a little iffy on whether the events of the episode were just an elaborate dream of Milo's or alternate realities. Regardless, he’ll be upset about being back in his human body in Terminal Tokyo.
SAMPLES
FIRST PERSON: Mabel and Milo, hittin' it off.
THIRD PERSON:
He staggers out of the classroom, fighting back the vomit-y feeling in the back of his throat. He stumbles and falls onto the cold linoleum, hands shaking, breath short, tears rising up in his eyes. Everything is wrong. He gags with every shallow breath, expecting to feel the rush of water from gills that aren't there.
How did this happen?! Is any of it real? Is it a dream? How is he supposed to wake up? You're supposed to wake up when the nightmare gets really bad, right? Why isn't it working!? He's never felt so scared before- nothing else has ever compared to this; not even getting chased by that tiger.. no, wait, was it just a cat? No, wait- which one was it? He tries to grab onto the lockers and pull himself up, but everything is off-kilter. His body is too heavy, the air is too cold, what's wrong with his arms?
They talked about this in health class, right? One of the health classes... a panic attack! He's doing this to himself! That only makes him shake more, because he should be able to control this, right, what if it just keeps getting worse and what if no one finds him, what if he's lost, how is he supposed to get home, he's not supposed to be like this-!
He slaps himself in the face, focusing on the sting instead. "Come on, Milo! Get a hold of yourself! You can do this, you can do this..."
One foot in front of the other, right? He can do that. With some effort, he hoists himself up and clings desperately to the wall. He makes a conscious effort to take big, slow gasps. The rise and fall of his chest is soothing, and he can feel the panic start to recede. But not completely.
He needed to think. He needed to get home. Real home.
He needed to talk to Oscar and Bea. They'd help him...
